On Saturday, December 11, three OLW Robotics Team competed in person at the FLL Robotics Regional Tournament this weekend. It was the largest regional tournament in the state with 38 teams participating. All of our OLW teams placed 2nd place or higher in at least one of the four main categories being judged.
Many of the teams at this very large tournament are from large public school. This makes our students’ accomplishment especially significant because there are not many Catholic schools that participate.
These are the fantastic results for our three Robotics teams!
Coding Cats (8th grade girls):
Champion’s Award – Tied for 2nd place – This award is the “main” award which is given to the teams who excelled in “ALL” of the categories in the competition. This includes Core Values, Robot Performance, Robot Design and the Innovation Project.
Coding Cats will advance to the State Championship Tournament in January.
Team members include: Clare B., Maggie B., Frankie D., Erin L., Megan N., Katie S., Grace T., and Annie U.
RoboCats (8th grade boys, 7th grade coed):
Robot Performance Award – 1st Place – This award is given to the team that scores the most points during the Robot Games. Teams have a chance to compete in up to four 2.5-minute rounds and their highest score counts.
Robot Design Award – 1st Place – This award is for teams that use outstanding programming principles and solid engineering practices to develop a robot that is mechanically sound, durable, efficient and highly capable of performing challenge missions.
RoboCats will advance to the State Championship Tournament in January.
Team members include: Sean A., Jacob B., Matthew H., Kevin M., Nicolas N., Elizabeth S., Anna S., and Ben S.
Wild Gears Rookie Team (6th grade coed):
Robot Design Award – Tied for 2nd Place – This award was a 1st and 2nd place for OLW! This award is for teams that use outstanding programming principles and solid engineering practices to develop a robot that is mechanically sound, durable, efficient and highly capable of performing challenge missions. Our rookie team used new (and different) robots this year which required them to code in a different programming language than our other teams.
Team members include: Jack B., Kyle G., Jack H., Louis M., Jackson M., and Fiona M..
This is the 6th year in a row that OLW has been represented at the State Championship Tournament. It is also the 4th year in a row that all of our 8th graders will have participated in a State Championship Tournament at least once during their three years on an OLW Robotics team, with most of them having participated in the State Championship in all three of their years on the team.
