Description

Beginning Band

Mr. Pancratz

Mostly 4 th graders; practice on Thursday mornings & during the school day; they learn the basics of their instrument; play some short classical pieces and movie selections such as Ode to Joy and Spiderman; play one or two short Christmas pieces at the beginning of the annual Christmas Show, such as Jingle Bells and Up on the Housetop; have about two concerts with the during the year; also plays and marches with the Concert Band at the Memorial Day Parade

Concert Band

Mr. Pancratz

5 th graders through 8 th graders; practice on Friday mornings and during the school day; play more difficult pieces than Beginning Band; learn more about their instrument; play musical accompaniments to narrations, such as A Jefferson Portrait; play selections of movie/ TV music, such as Lord of the Rings, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Hogan’s Heroes March; play classic pieces such as Pachebel’s Canon and Rhapsody in Blue; play pieces in the annual Christmas show such as Sleigh Ride, All is Calm, and Listen to the Season; some 8 th graders get special parts in the Christmas Show; have two to three concerts per year plus a possible band assembly for the school; have played the National Anthem at DePaul basketball games for about the past three years; also plays and marches at the Memorial Day Parade; eighth graders serve as the leaders when marching

Jazz Band

Mr. Pancratz

A group of primarily seventh and eighth graders that play jazz pieces at the end of the year concert and/or band assembly; starts after Christmas; include members from Concert Band and guitarists/ bassists; meet weekly to practice

Newspaper

Write a total of three newspapers for the year; cover school events such as Cotillion; Halloween; Track-a-Thon; dances; Valentine’s Day;“Last Wills and Testaments”; class trips to Washington, D.C., Springfield, IL, and to Camp Timber-Lee, WI; take pictures at events to add to the newspaper; ask people for quotes about events to add to articles; meet about once a month

Pep Band

Mr. Pancratz

Students in Concert Band that volunteer to play at the eighth grade boys’ and girls’ Pack the Gym basketball games and/ or Championship games; meet on Fridays for at least two weeks before the event

Peer Council

Mr. O’Connell

Organize outings that involve kids from our parish. (Including movie nights, battle of the bands, etc.); meet once a month on the third Thursday of the month

Safety Patrol

Miss Miller

A group of students that are assigned street corners on Wayside property to ensure the safety of kids crossing the street to get to school; teams rotate shifts; everyone meets when necessary for changes and teams meet once a week to switch vests

Strings N’ Things/ Christmas Carol Band

Mr. Pancratz

Play musical accompaniments to Church songs such as Lord of the Dance, Canticle of the Sun, The Great Amen, etc; sixth and seventh graders from Strings ‘n’ Things also play at the 8 th grade graduation mass; includes violinists; meet about every other week; plays for some all school masses and when requested by teachers planning the mass; play an assortment of Christmas songs before the annual Christmas Show

Student Council

Mrs. Hettinger

A group of 5 th through 8 th grade students who organize school events such as spirit days, the annual pep rally, choose charities for Pizza Days, decide on themes for the dances and also decorate for the dances; they campaign for positions on the council, give speeches, and are elected by their fellow students; meet about once a month and/or when needed during lunchtime

Technology Club

Mrs. Corbett

Maintain the school web site, design presentations for Open House and other computer based projects; open to 7th and 8th grade students who have an aptitude for computer applications; they work once a week during study periods, or before/after school or lunch

Board Game Club/Chess Club Board Game Page 1st-8th graders get together and play board games and chess once or twice a month.

Yearbook

Put together the yearbook for OLW; stay after school for about an hour and a half to work on the layout and content; take pictures of events for the yearbook; help distribute yearbooks
