Elementary Computer Lab Information
My name is Lisa Goeske and I am the elementary computer lab director. I see all students in grades K-5. This is my second year teaching at Wayside. I have a BA in History from DePaul University and a MA in Education from Roosevelt University.
Students in K-5 have a scheduled time in the computer lab each week. Below is the amount of time per grade:
Kindergarten: 20 minutes/week
1st: 25 minutes/week
2nd: 30 minutes/week
3rd: 30 minutes/week
4th: 30 minutes/week
5 th: 30 minutes/week
Students in K-3 use the following software:
- KeySkills: Phonics and math review and reinforcement
- KidPix: drawing program
- Max Write: word processing program for younger children (grades 1-3)
- Kidspiration: visual representation of information, graphic organizers, visual math practice
- Numbers Undercover: math mysteries
- Type to Learn, Jr: basic keyboarding (grade 2)
- Learn About Weather: supplemental computer lessons to classroom curriculum (grade 2)
- Learn About Plants: supplemental computer lessons to classroom curriculum (grade 1)
The goals for students in grades K-3 are to teach them mouse control, opening and closing programs, to be comfortable using computers and to teach basic skills that can be expanded on in grades 4 and 5.
Students in grades 4-5 use the following software:
- KeySkills: math review and reinforcement
- Microsoft Office: Word and Excel
- Kidspiration: visual representation of information, graphic organizers, visual math practice
- Type to Learn and Type for Fun: keyboarding lessons and games
The goals for students in grades 4 and 5 are to teach the students the “grown up” versions of Microsoft Office, to get students to learn to keyboard, and to continue their comfort level online and with computers in general. The main goal for 5 th grade is to prepare them for the Middle School Computer Lab.
This year, students in grades 3-5 will be keeping computer portfolios all year. I will be sending home the portfolios after each student evaluates him or herself and I take a look at it too. Students in grades K-2 will bring home work as it is completed.
