Discover is a pullout class offered to all students pre-k through fifth grade. The class is organized in units of varying length and subject matter at each grade level. Units cover a variety of disciplines including science, social studies, language arts and the fine arts. Students are encouraged to explore the many ways in which they demonstrate their intelligence.

The program makes a concerted effort to actively engage the students in the natural world around them. They are encouraged to observe and record the wonders they perceive – to become scientists of the everyday. As a corollary of this observation, students are encouraged to respect, value and preserve the great diversity they experience in the world around them.

Topics vary by grade level. Each year, some “tried and true” units are repeated at each level, while new ones are added. Materials are drawn from many sources, among them the internet, our classroom library and the Wayside library collection.

During class, students work in small groups, and with a partner as well as by themselves. Kindergarten through fifth grade classes meet once a week for forty minutes

Our motto for the year is : Quiet: where peace is found; where God resides; where thought begins. Try it!
