Academics

Our Lady of the Wayside Catholic School strives to maintain a challenging and enriching academic experience. From preschool to 8th grade, OLW fosters a rich learning environment for all students. Our core curriculum offers religion, language arts, math, science, and social studies. Additionally, we offer music, physical education, computer skills, art, and Spanish. We have fulltime P.E., Computer, Art, Music, Spanish, Reading, and Library specialists. We also offer a Band program for students from the 4th to the 8th grades.

The Archdiocese of Chicago establishes the curriculum, and the principal and faculty are responsible for making adaptations at the school level.

Students in the Early Childhood programs take part in educational lessons in a small group setting. Education at the elementary level is fundamental to success in later years. OLW is committed to giving students a strong foundation on which to build their education. Smaller class sizes are beneficial to the learning environment of each child. Middle school courses build on the foundation laid in the elementary years and challenge students to investigate and analyze topics more fully.

The cornerstone of OLW is its Catholic faith. In addition to daily religious instruction, each day begins and ends with prayer. Our relationship with God and each other and the application of Christian values to our daily lives are topics that are emphasized in all grades. Retreats are an integral part of the religion curriculum for 7th and 8th grade students.

By the time our students are ready to graduate, we believe they will have both the academic foundation and study skills required for high school, as well as a strong grounding in their faith that will enable them to be positive contributors to society.
