The students have begun an independent reading unit. Students are reading a book of their own choosing and analzye it on their own. Their final assessment will be an essay due on May 13, 2013. Information regarding the essay will be posted soon.

The 8th grade students are continuing their grammar study with a unit on Verbals. They are learning what participles, gerunds, and infinitives are and how to use them in their writing.

The sixth graders are learning how to put together a properly written and organized research paper. Working in conjunction with Mrs. Goeske, students will take the research they gathered in Social Studies and then organize it into a cohesive piece of writing.
The first step is outlining. During the week of April 29th, students will use their notes to develop an outline for their papers. Click on the following link for a copy of the outline template:

Better Than Natural Program with Mr. O’Connell
Each year, Our Lady of the Wayside’s Director of Youth Ministry, Kevin O’Connell teaches a supplementary program in Religion class entitled Better Than Natural. This program connects to Part 3 of Catechism–”Life in Christ”– and deals with Christian virtues such as Justice, Courage, etc. and ties them into real life situations a middle school student may face. Make sure you are keeping track of the date you accessed websites! You need that information for your works cited.
Use Microsoft Word to create your citations for all papers! Click on the “References” Tab, then make sure you choose MLA format (for LA/SS/RDG) or APA (for Science).

The Washington D.C. trip will be taking place May 15-18th. A trip meeting is scheduled for Thursday, May 2nd at 7 P.M. in the Father Mackin Center. Students who are participating in this trip must attend with at least one parent.
