Service & Ministry

Each school year, the students from Our Lady of the Wayside participate in a multitude of service and ministry related projects. Such projects allow teachers to integrate Catholic social teachings into real-world issues and events; students’ understanding of their faith and their ability to affect positive social change are greatly enhanced. In short, these social mission opportunities expand upon the faith-based mission of the school: enriching minds, fostering faith.  Although some programs are undertaken by the entire school, most are designed to be grade-specific.  Regardless of the projects’ scope, these learning and sharing opportunities all have one thing in common: they develop leadership skills; foster a sense of responsibility and active participation in our faith; and promote the importance of giving back as
God calls us to do.

Below are examples of Our Lady of the Wayside School service-and-ministry related projects.

  • Make Christmas place mats to be distributed to local parishes and food kitchens.
  • Collect 100 juice boxes when kindergarten celebrates the first 100 day of school.  The juice boxes are donated to the parish PADS program.
  • Collect pencils for underprivileged schools during Catholic School Week.
  • Linus Project – Each student makes a square and the squares are sewn together to make a quilt for children in hospitals.
  • First Communion Retreat – A special day when communicants and parents spend time preparing for the sacrament.
  • Make cards / ornaments during Christmas for Manor Care nursing home.
  • Assemble Thanksgiving meals for families in need.
  • Food drive for the Little Sisters of the Poor.
  • Christmas cards and care packages to soldiers.
  • Witches Auction to raise money for the Giving Tree and Warm the Children.

In addition to service activities, Our Lady of the Wayside holds grade level and all school masses throughout the school year.  The OLW Mass schedule can be viewed here
